One of the more overlooked aspects of running a restaurant, office building, or school is setting up and maintaining the restroom, however, this process is very important. There are a lot of things to consider when setting up a public restroom—things such as commercial toilet paper dispensers, paper napkin dispensers, number of stalls and number of sinks—that should not be overlooked. The following is a quick sampling of things to consider.

Appearance is important in a public restroom. A restroom should look as sleek and sanitary as possible. Shiny metallic or black surfaces often give the illusion of cleanliness; so these are often the colors of choice for stalls, sink countertops, and various dispensers.

It is advisable to use automatic dispensers whenever possible. Automatic paper towel dispensers drastically cut down on bacteria and the transmission of germs because patrons do not have to touch anything to get paper towels. Likewise, if the budget permits, it is advisable to get automatic flushing toilets and automatic sinks as well.

For most public restrooms, larger commercial toilet paper dispensers are often recommended. The larger dispenser reduces the chances of the roll running out, which can be a personal disaster of catastrophic proportions. In extremely high volume restrooms, it may be a good idea to get the type of dispenser with a built in spot for replacement rolls.

Space and traffic should dictate the amount of stalls, sinks, and hand drying stations. Standard bathroom protocol dictates that there should be more stalls/urinals than sinks and more sinks than hand dryers or paper towel dispensers. Although something as simple as a commercial paper towel dispenser may seem like an insignificant choice, all of these small parts make up the whole of a bathroom, and bathroom presentation has a very subtle subconscious psychological effect on its visitors. Bathroom presentation is extremely important, especially in restaurants.
